STEM Picture The CCA Aquaponics team took first place at the Youth Connection Charter School (YCCS) STEM Academic Challenge. The theme of the challenge was “Sustainable Solutions to Transform the Urban Landscape” and was held at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Seniors LaVonne Anderson, Khawwah Williams, and Jonnequa Willis and juniors Imari Bearden and John Crooks conducted a three-week experiment to test the yield of spinach and basil  plants one could gather from a 10-gallon fish tank containing three tilapia. The students constructed a system using a standard fish tank and filter with a custom grow bed.
